Giga Information Group and WARIA Announce
the Winners of 1999 Giga Global Excellence Awards
for Excellence in Workflow

The case studies of these award-winners and selected finalists were published in the Excellence in Practice, Volume II

October 13, 1999 – Brussels, Belgium. Giga Information Group and the Workflow And Reengineering International Association (WARIA) are pleased to announce the winners for the 1999 Giga Excellence Awards for innovation and excellence in workflow implementations. These prestigious awards are used to recognize organizations that have demonstrably excelled in implementing innovative solutions to meet strategic business objectives.

The Giga Global Excellence Awards (now in their 10th year) take place annually in conjunction with the European Business Process and Workflow (BPW) Conference.

The award is for EXCELLENCE in WORKFLOW. There are no sub-categories. Particular attention, however, was paid to workflow implementations that show workflow extending beyond the corporate boundaries to support customers, suppliers, trading partners etc. The finalists were judges based on the following criteria:

 Innovation

*      Innovative use of technology to further strategic corporate objectives

*      Degree of complexity in the underlying business process and IT architecture

*      Creative and successful deployment of advanced workflow concepts

*      Level of integration with other advanced technologies

 Implementation

*      Successful implementation approach

*      Extent of change management process

*      Level of overall system complexity

*      Scope and scale of the implementation (e.g. size, geography, inter-company processes)

*      The system can be in the middle of being installed, but what has already been installed must be able to stand on its own in terms of excellence and demonstrable benefits.

 Impact

*      Extent and impact of demonstrated productivity improvements

*      Significance of cost savings

*      Level of increased revenues, product enhancements, customer service or quality improvements

*      Proven strategic importance to the organization's mission

*      Degree to which the system enabled a culture change within the organization

*      Impact of system on competitive positioning in the marketplace

The Winners OF THE 1999 GIGA GLOBAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS are:

North America, including Canada and Mexico

Silver Award: Lubrizol Corporation, Wicliffe, Ohio, USA nominated by Action Technologies

Gold Award: Prudential Real Estate and Relocation Service, Irvine, CA, USA nominated by JetForm Inc.

 PAN EUROPEAN

Silver Award: Robert McBride Ltd, Manchester, UK nominated by Staffware plc

Gold Award: La Poste DCFP, Paris, France nominated by W4 (World Wide Web Workflow) with integration by SEMA Group

Following further consideration of the finalists from the Pan European Region, it became apparent to the judges, that the submissions from Middle East and Africa merited a special category.  This decision was based on the regional conditions under which workflow technology was implemented.

AFRICA AND MIDDLE EAST

Silver Award: Fast Forward Johannesburg, South Africa nominated by Lucent Technologies and Global Technology Business Intelligence

Gold Award: Saambou Bank Ltd, Pretoria, South Africa nominated by DST

Owing to the fact that there were several remarkable case studies showing how workflow had been used primarily in a knowledge management environment, the judges decided, at their discretion, to create an entirely new category for knowledge management that was judged separately and on a global basis.  It upped the stakes considerably, but it enabled Giga to select two clear winners.

Knowledge Management Global

Silver Award: IBM Global Services, Somers, NY, USA nominated by IBM Global Services

Gold Award: Phillips Fox, Sydney, Australia nominated by PC Docs Fulcrum

Winners and finalists will receive additional recognition by having their case studies published in the next volume of the Excellence in Practice series by Future Strategies Inc.
